When it comes to braving the elements, whether it be heavy rain or snow, a good set of windshield wiper blades is a must. However, with the sometimes-harsh weather here in Rome, Utica, and Manlius, your blades can wear down quicker than you might think.
How Often Should Windshield Wiper Blades Be Changed?
The answer to this question depends on the climate of your town, but rule of thumb suggests wiper blades should be changed at least once a year. However, with our snowy winters and hot summers, you may need to replace more often.
Extreme weather can wear down those blades. In the summer, high temperatures and constant UV exposure can break down the rubber compounds extremely quickly. Plus, constant icing and cold in the winter can do just the same.
Know the Signs of Wear
There are a few key signs you should be aware of when trying to spot windshield wiper blade wear. They include:
- Squeaking noises
- Split rubber
- Bent wiper frames
As soon as you notice these signs, it’s likely time for a change. However, you can prevent them easily with just a bit of basic upkeep.
First and foremost, you should wash your windshield frequently, say every time you fill your tank. Residue, dirt, and oils on the glass can cause the rubber to wear faster.
In the winter, you should also be pulling the blades up and away from the windshield whenever harsh weather is expected. Be sure both blades and glass are de-iced before use!
How to Replace Windshield Blades
If you’ve been wondering how to replace windshield blades, you’ve come to the right place. Fortunately, it’s both a quick and inexpensive task. The first step, of course, is to buy your new blades. Before doing so, you’ll have to measure your current ones to make sure you pick the right size.
Next, you’ll need to remove the old blades. Start by moving the arms up and away from the glass. On the underside of the wiper blade, you’ll find a small tab. Press this tab to slide the blade off. If by some chance this tab is broken, you can use a key to help slip the blade off.
Setting the new blades in place is simple. Pull the rubber tightly onto the arm. It should automatically lock into place with a click. Once you’ve heard this, gently lower the arm back onto the windshield. Be sure to test them out before use.
Need Assistance Replacing Windshield Wiper Blades?
It isn’t too hard to replace windshield wiper blades, but if you’ve never done it before, you may need a bit of assistance. The service team at Nye Volkswagen is always here to help all Rome, Utica, and Manlius drivers replace worn-out car components. Contact us today for assistance!

Kids make messes. It comes with the territory despite the frustration it might cause. Still, you’ve got to remember: to your child, it’s all just play.
A child’s need for exploration is as big as their body is small. So, why not set them loose in a place where they can feed that desire? At the Utica Children’s Museum, they can explore to their heart’s content.
The Utica Children’s Museum isn’t so much about looking as it is about touching and experiencing. It’s hands-on learning at its finest.
Tons of great, new exhibits are coming to the Utica Children’s Museum. Here’s a little taste of what’s in the works…
The Sensory Exploration Zone
Kids require sensory stimulation. When they start bouncing off the walls or throwing tantrums, it’s likely because they’ve had either too little or too much.
The Sensory Exploration Zone will offer your child a fun and happy balance of stimulus. Here, they can play with water and sensory tables, sand, interactive wall panels, a mini trampoline, and more. They’ll be tuckered out in the best way!
Consider this one a learning game. Your kids will encounter characters called Perios, each representing a different element on the periodic table. Through use of these blocks and puzzles, they’ll learn all the fundamentals of chemistry.
More to Come
While the Sensory Exploration Zone and Perios World are two of our favorites, we’re also working on a variety of other exhibits, including:
- NASA & Space
It takes a fair amount of time and funding to get these exhibits off the ground, and none of it would be possible without the help of patrons and volunteers just like you. If you’d like to donate time or funds to help, you may do so here.

Gerber’s 1933 Tavern
A historic Liberty Street landmark, Gerber’s 1933 Tavern has gone through many permutations over the years. In its original incarnation, however, it was a rollicking speakeasy.
