Keeping your tires well maintained is one of the most important things you can do for your car. Consistently installing up-to-date tires will markedly improve both your vehicle’s safety and its fuel efficiency.
At NYE VW of Rome, we’re very concerned with the safety of our drivers in Rome, Utica, and Manlius. That’s why we created this guide to educate drivers on the signs your car needs new tires. In need of new tires? Schedule a service appointment with the friendly staff at our Volkswagen Tire Store to replace your tires, today!
Sign #1: Tread Wear
The first indication that your car could use some new tires is the level of tread wear – if your treads are too worn down, it’s time for a replacement set.
There are two simple ways to measure this. First, most modern tires have built-in indicator bars. Over time, as you drive the car, the rubber will slowly wear off to reveal the indicator bars, which are usually positioned perpendicular to the flow of the tread. If several of these bars are peeking through the rubber of your tire, schedule a service appointment as soon as possible.
The second way to measure your tread wear uses a pretty cool trick. Take a penny and stick it into your tread with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing down: if his entire head is visible, your tread is too low, and you need to schedule maintenance.
Sign #2: Cracks, Bulges, and Blisters
Cracks, bulges, and blisters in either the sidewall or the tread are serious signs that your car needs new tires. If you don’t replace the damaged tire at the next opportunity, you run the risk of it blowing out while you’re driving. This can pose a huge danger to you and your passengers, especially if you’re driving at high speeds on the freeway.
Sign #3: Tire Pressure
If your tires have consistently low pressure, or if you notice that they’re deflating at a rate greater than one pound per square inch (PSI) per month, you could use some replacements. Although there are certain situations that might warrant slightly lower tire pressure, such as driving in icy or snowy conditions, it’s generally important to maintain proper tire pressure, as it’ll save you a lot of fuel and help keep you safe.
Sign #4: Intense Vibrations
If your car seems to be vibrating a lot more than usual as you drive, especially if you’re driving on well-paved roads, it’s time to schedule a service appointment. Intense vibrations could mean that the rear tires are out of balance, or that the tire’s internal structure is compromised. If you’re experiencing anything less than a smooth ride, it’s a sign that your car might need new tires.
